hello Swindy,

Many thanks for the reply.

Just what I wanted.

The name I seek was not in this list.

However, can you confirm that West was the only one KIA from this crew and that the others became POW's ?

Thanks

Alex

Alex,

According to the information that I have, West, McBride, McLeary, Roggenbuck were KIA but I do not have official confirmation.  This information comes from "The Fighting 463rd" group history book.  Those names are listed on the "In Memoriam" page of men Killed in Action.

Is it possible to get a copy of the book you cite?

The book you are requesting has long been out of print (possibly 60 years).  The book editor, Hal Rubin used to make some "Kinkos" copies to sell but Mr. Rubin has since passed away.  I understand that a copy of the book will be placed here on the web site soon.  It comes from Mr. Rubin's nephew but I also understand it will not be a downloadable version.

I recently came across an original copy of the book on Abe Books where they wanted around $200 for the book.  Collector's item, I guess.  I have an original copy that belonged to my father.  It actually belongs to my younger brother but he has graciously allowed me to use it.

Keep looking for the book to arrive on the web site.  I have no idea of when it will happen but it is supposed to take place.

Alex, I'm the daughter of Claude Rains, pilot of the plane you inquired about. According to the MACR # 10649 and other documentation, crew status is as follows:
Claude Rains, pilot, POW Stalag Luft 1
Henry F. Renard, co-pilot, POW Stalag Luft 1
Harvey L. Eustrom, Navigator, POW Stalag Luft 1
Ernest F. Scanlon, Bombardier, POW Stalag Luft 1
Earl C. Wellborn, Jr, Engineer, POW
Zelah G. McBride, Radio Operator, KIA
Walter R. West, Waist Gunner, KIA
David R. McCleary, Ball Turret, KIA
George A. Roggenbuck, Tail Gunner, KIA
Let me know if you would like copies of this MACR or would like the address of the agency that supplied it to me.  I have more info from other sources including a statement that Earl Wellborn's son recently shared with me. Others have shared so much with me and I would be honored to share any information that I have.
