I would like some input, suggestions, etc on how to start compiling an oral history of the 463rd. Much of it could be incorporated onto the web site. As an example, we could have hot links to the various crew positions on the B-17 graphic that would open up an oral explanation of the duties of that crew member given by someone who served in that position.

Any other ideas? I feel that this is a project that has to be put into play sooner rather than later.

Love the idea of an oral history, Tim.  I'll think about ideas.

Hi folks I love the idea of an oral history from surviving 463rd members.I'd sure love to listen to their stories.I'd love to hear the voices from my fathers crew.

I told Janet about a year and a half ago that I got 3 of my fathers missions in a P.C. Flight Simulator add on which had a very complex B-17 bomber(with nearly all of the pilot and co-pilot controls) in it for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004.

The add on is called Wings of Power heavy bombers and jets by Shockwave Productions at

http://www.shockwaveproductions.com

Sadly my father passed away one month before it was released in August 2004 so he never got to see it.

I really miss dad.

However there is no actual combat in Wings of Power.

It's strictly a pilot or co-pilot simulation.

Shockwave Productions also has a very cool add on called Firepower which features a B-17 in a combat P.C. simulation setting that has all the crew positions in it.It has many other aircraft as well and is an add on to Microsoft Combat Flight Simulator 3.

If you would like to see your father's missions in a future simulation contact them I'm sure that they would be interested. Here is a link to their message boards.

Shockwave Productions was planning on a remake of B-17 Flying Fortress The Mighty 8th called B-17 The Legend Returns but they were going to include the 15th A.F. as well. However the project got cancelled due to licensing problems with the owner of the simulation(Atari).

There is talk now about how B-17 III could be made as an extensive add on with Microsoft Flight Simulator X which is due to be released towards the end of 2006.That is if it is possible with the FSX engine.

It would be the most complex simulation of the B-17 on a P.C. that has ever been planned.

I also recently helped put 463rd B.G. members in a strategy game called "From Eagle Day to the Bombing of the Reich" by Matrix Games. It used to be 2 seperate strategy games by Talonsoft called Battle of Britain and 12 O'Clock High bombing the Reich. They are trying to make it as accurate as possible.

It looks like the what the mission planners did during the war.

It has not been released yet though.

Only pilots and commanders are listed though.

Here is a link to their message board.

Hi Tim --

First, I have to congratulate you and thank you for such a wonderful job of putting this new website together and getting it up and running.

Secondly, oral histories connected to the crew positions on a B-17 is a SUPER idea, and I agree, better to get it off the ground sooner than later. Sadly, time is running out for something like this.  At the reunion in Sept. would be a wonderful time to record some histories if someone could get that done. Are you going to be there?  Check out this website: http://www.arizonawingcaf.com/pages/crew.html

It might give you some ideas on how to present the graphics and any descriptive write-up you might want to include. I have a journalism background and would be happy to help you with anything you need written, if you want to utilize me. Should you need me, just let me know.

Good luck with this project.

Sincerely,

Merrylee Lanehart

Merrylee, I like the way the oral histories are presented on the site you sent.  Seems like that might not be too difficult.

We could make announcements at the hospitality room each night and at the squadron and open meetings.  Maybe we could supply addressed envelopes for the men.  They could take them home and mail in the stories.  I would be glad to help transcribe them to the sites, if that's possible.

Ted, you've done a great job with the site. This idea would do so much to preserve their histories.  Thanks.

Janet
