Hello all, My name is Brett and I'm currently serving in the USAF. I'm trying to trace my Great Uncle's past. I was told by family members that he flew with the Swoose group on Miss Behavin and was shot down in 1944 over Italy. I wanted to know if anyone may have a roster of the plane's crew or where I may find this information. His name was Hugh Diggins and I beleive he was a waist gunner. Thank you all in advance.

You probably want to contact Martyjhawk (he says his uncle was the tailgunner in your uncles crew).
Read this post.

Martyjhawk can be contacted here too.I think he has a couple of pictures of

"Miss Behavin".Joel (Swindy) has a lot of pictures on his Pictoral History of the 463rd CD's too which you can obtain.

Jon,
I'm in email contact with him about his uncle but I definitely echo your encouragement to contact Martyjayhawk.  He will have some additional information.

I'm sending him what I have.

Joel

Hi Lori,Swindy (Joel) has just acquired a lot of the Missing Air Crew Reports(MACR)'s so perhaps your father's name (Floyd Junior O'Dell) is listed amongst one of those reports with the rest of the crew's names. It's just a quick hint for Swindy so he could possibly find it for you.

Lori,
The "Missing Air Crew Reports" Jon refers to were documents filled out whenever a crew went MIA over enemy territory, regardless whether they were returned quickly or not.  I do have most of the 463rd MACR's downloaded but have not had time to go through all of them yet.  Hopefully I will be able to do so soon.

I did check the rosters I have for the 773rd Sq and do not find your father's name listed there nor a Russell Trost.  That is not to say they did not serve there.  These rosters were created at specific times to list personnel on active duty prior to a specific date when a Presidential (Distinguished) Unit Citation was awarded.  I have found that there were several names not listed simply because of timing when the rosters were created.

I also have created a database of shot down personnel and your father's name does not appear there either.  But again, it is not a definitive listing.  I have to rely on other sources for information.

I will continue to research this and see what I can come up with for you.  Please be patient.  It may take some time.  If you had any other crew names, it would be most helpful.  Plane names are not too important although it wouldn't hurt to know which planes he may have flown on.

Take care,

hi, thanks for the info, i am so glad to know i have help searching. i will try to find out about any other names of the crew. i don't even know the name of the plane, sorry to say. i may not even be spelling "russell trost" correctly. i wish i would've talked more to my dad about the war, but i think it bothered him alot to remember. i think, according to what he told my mom, when they were shot down over italy, one of his crew died in his arms. i don't know how many crew were lost in that incident. were you referring to this when you said your mom talked of this also? there is a crew photo posted in the 97th group member photo gallery. i will try to post it on this site also.

                           thanks, lori
p.s. i just learned 3 more names from my mom. they are as follows:

johnny depew, vernie wherle, & dardy webster
