I am looking for information on my uncle 2 Lt. Stephen R. Kennedy. I have pieced together that he was possibly killed on take off on November 29th, 1944 in Italy. Any information would be appreciated.

Kip,

book "The Fighting 463rd" says (page 91): On November 29th, while taking off on a mission, a 773rd plane crashed. Listed as killed in the crash were Lts. J. J. Atchinson, C. Pratt, S. Kennedy and Sergeants C. Stinde, F. Wyman, J. Koch and M. McCloud. Those injured were F/O A. Goodell, Lt. K. Knaack, Sgt. A. Schneider.

Svat., Czech rep.

Svat,

Thank you for your information. I did find a letter written to a survivor of the crash listing all the men on that particular flight. The things I'm trying to find out about are what position my uncle held on the crew; what mission were they taking off on; and what was the cause of the crash? I would appreciate any contacts you know of. Again, thank you for your help.

Kip,
Apparently the mission on which the plane crashed was cancelled, I would assume due to bad weather because it states in the history book that the November weather was becoming increasingly worse.  There are no mission records that I can find for that date so I am assuming it was cancelled although I cannot say that with certainty.  And I have no idea what the intended target would have been.

I assume that Stephen Kennedy was in the bombardier's position that day but again, I have no records to confirm that.  On 24 November 1944 this same crew was flying a mission and on that mission Kennedy was flying as Radar Navigator (radar bombardier).

The only other information that I have is that the men killed in the crash were listed as non-battle casualties, I suppose since they were not actually in the combat zone when the crash occurred.

That's about all I have to offer at present.  If I find more information regarding Lt. Kennedy, I will contact you immediately with that information.

Joel

Svat / Kip,
What you say is true, Svat but the 463rd did not bomb Linz, Austria on the 28th or 29th of Nov.  The 2nd and 97th Bomb Groups did bomb Linz on the 29th but my records indicate that none of the other 5th Wing groups did so.  If you have definitive information regarding this, I would truly like to read it.

Joel,

probably You´re right. I got info just from books of 2nd BG (see http://www.2ndbombgroup.org ) and "armyairforces" (what happened day by day). That would be great to contact those two men (sons of crew members) I suggested.
