I am looking for information on my uncle 2 Lt. Stephen R. Kennedy. He is listed as being KIA on a mission to Innsbruck, Austria, November 16th, 1944. One aircraft was lost but he was not listed on the MACR (a John Kennedy was). My late mother indicated he may have been filling in on an unscheduled flight. Any information would be appreciated.

Kip,
The Kennedy shot down on the 16 November 1944 mission was Lt. John C. Kennedy and he was indeed a substitute navigator on that flight.  The entire crew survived being shot down but four of the crew were taken captive and became POWs, one of which was Lt John C. Kennedy.

I have researched the report of death for Lt Stephen R. Kennedy, 773rd Sq, but my records do not indicate that he was KIA on 16 November 1944 but rather on November 30 1944.  In fact, my records indicate that his death was the result of a NBA - non-battle accident, which could mean a host of things.  But the scant records I have regarding his death indicate their plane crashed on take-off and seven of the crew members were killed.  Also the ones who died were listed as NBA, which I do not understand because they were taking off on a mission.

And by the way, one report states that the plane went down on takeoff on the 29th of Nov. while the other says it was the 30th of Nov.  Splitting hairs I know but thought I would mention it.
