Can anybody help me? Need some info?  Plane name and crew?
My dad's name is John Frank Powers was T/sgt  and Tail Gunner on B-17 and was in Tunisia and was from a Texas base.

He had a friend on the crew named John pierce - I think that is how to spell that last name.

Just cannot remember now. And my dad past away, my dad was very proud for being on a B-17, he did not talk much about the flying the raids, he would start to cry, when he was in his 80's.  But now we lost the information.

Thank-you so much!

I do not find any of the names you have provided on the rosters of the 463rd Bomb Group which is not surprising since you mentioned he flew out of Tunisia.  The 463rd never flew out of Tunisia except when new crews were flying from the states to their new base near Foggia, Italy (Celone AAB [Foggia #1])

There were only 6 B-17 groups that flew out of Italy, the original four being 2nd, 97th, 99th and 301st.  Now they did fly out of bases in Northern Africa until the lower half of Italy was taken by the Allies.  They then established a number of bases around Foggia for the B-17 groups plus a host of B-24 groups.  While my roster lists are not 100% complete, I would have thought that I would have had at least one of the names one my lists.  Now if you have documentation that states that your father flew with the 463rd BG, I will do my utmost to find his name on any crew but in all honesty, the name does not come to mind and I have worked extensively using the personnel lists of the 463rd.  My suggestion would be to contact one of the other B-17 groups to see if you can find any information from them but be aware, the last I knew both the 97th and 301st had disbanded their organizations so I do not know where you would go to find info from them except perhaps the National Archives II in College Park, MD.  If I was going there again this year, I would certainly do what I could to find some information regarding him.

I do have some post WW II transfer orders that I could look through but if he served in Tunisia, he would have probably long since completed his tour of duty and returned to the states.

I'll do what I can for you but I wouldn't place much hope with me finding any info for you and since I am not in contact with any of the other groups.  As far as I know the 2nd BG is still an active organization but I do not have their contact information, sorry.

Sincerely,
Joel Swindlehurst

We are going through lots of old boxes at this time. I will check with other B-17 groups too. I hope I can find any documentation.

He came in later in the war with the B-17 group. I remember my mom was telling me few weeks back; My dad was coming back from a raid and the B-17 over shot the airfield and crashed into some sand. Just more info for you [wink]
