A -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A very nice individual offered to re-create the B-17 42-97550 "Lassie and her Lads" for me by repainting her (in color) for the add on WOP II B-17 by A2ASimulations for Microsoft Flight Simulator X.It looks pretty close to me except that I think the Y should be bigger.I told the individual that I guessed the "Lassie and her Lads" lettering was either in black or in red.
I decided black because my cousin did a painting of her for my dad a long time ago in the 1960's.Is this right? At  first I thought that the lettering was red.
Are there any old timers here to critique this?
All we had were those black and white pictures to go by and some colored drawings of other 463rd BG B-17's for examples. He added my dad's crew names on the ship although that's not what it should be because several other crews used her.But I thought that it was O.K..He did so to honor my dad's crew.Pretty cool eh?.He told me that he might work on repainting the B-17 "Pig Chaser" as well.Very kind of him.He has done a very nice job and I'm sure that it took lots of effort.Really I'd like to see a huge collection of repainted colorized 463rd BG B-17's for the WOP II add on for FSX.

I'll ask for a repaint of the B-17 AAF serial number 44-6394 tail number 46394 "Oh,my achin back!" for the WOP II B-17 add on for FSX.
I see one picture of her here on the 463rd's website.
http://www.463rd.org/crewsDtoG/grimes.htm
If you have any more information about her (like the lettering color) just let me know.
Otherwise it will just be a guess repaint with the lettering
,normal 463rd BG markings and tail number.
It would be better to have more pictures though because I am not sure of what is on the Pilot's side of the ship and any other markings.
The repainter has several 463rd B-17's done so far.I couldn't send him any pictures from the Pictoral CD's (I would have to ask Swindy first) but we found several pictures of B-17's from the 463rd BG's website and other pictures of 463rd B-17's from other Internet Websites.
Here are the B-17's that he has so far (some are with other Bomb Groups) but there are now several re-paints with the 463rd's B-17's.

I'd love to see this one too.  My Uncle Lou flew this ship on several missions.

I'll notify the volunteer re-painter who is kindly taking his time out to do these re-paints.By the way I am sorry that I didn't check my email from you Ray.I just sent you an email. You guys should sign up at A2ASimulations forums to discuss the repaint
with the person kindly volunteering to doing it.
One thing that I saw on Joel's Pictoral CD's was that the B-17 Vaudeville it's coming back had an unknown tail number.Should it be a fictitious one? or do you have any idea what the tail number was? He could just use a fake tail number. At least you will have the nose painted right with 463rd BG markings on the B-17.
Again please sign up at the forum to discuss this or any other re-paint desired with the re-painter.
http://a2asimulations.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=12216

If those re-paints are too much for him there are other re-painters that you could kindly ask by making your post here after signing up at this forum.
http://a2asimulations.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=29

Be forewarned you will be entering B-17 Pilot training with the WOPII B-17 and FSX.

Thanks that will help.Be sure to ask Joel's (Swindy) permission from now on before we use any pictures to replicate these aircraft.I'd like to just stick with using pictures found on the Internet, the 463rd website or pictures owned by the family.
Richard I talked to the repainter and he said he would have a go at repainting "OH,MY ACHIN BACK!"
I haven't heard back from him yet though on Ray's request though.
By the way Ray do you have the pictoral CD's that Joel put out.?
Under his 1st Pictoral History of the 463rd BG CD in the folder Nose-Tail Art under slide 48 there is a close up of the writing of Pandora's Box on that B-17.
Since you last sent me an email be sure to check this out.

New Edit- Ray I talked to the repainter and he said that he will get around to repainting
the 463rd BG B-17 Vaudeville It's coming back.

I love it. Guys you have no idea what this means to me. My dad is dying of bone cancer and was only 13 when his brother Lou died in August '44. He gave me hi mission books 6 weeks ago and i came across you guys. I update him daily and he loves hearing about his brothers past. i am getting to know more myself and realize these missions were not milk runs. Vaudeville was shot down July'44 and another ship, The Simp, that he also few was shot down in Aug. ;44. My biggest worry in life has been a mortgage payment and a 4 foot put. I have a great life because of these men. I know it. I am going to keep up the research and see what else I can dig up.

See you soon.

Ray I think that you would enjoy this video about what your uncle did as a bombardier if you don't already have it.
One of my friends gave me this video.

and also especially this highly detailed book which I should get too.

http://www.amazon.com/Legendary-Norden-Bombsight-Schiffer-Military/dp/0764307231

Well Ray,Nathan the repainter had to re-paint the B-17
Mary Lou/Betty Lou that you said your uncle was on in your email to me.So there is at least one B-17 that your uncle was on.I mentioned that it didn't have a Y or Pie slice on it and he had the wrong tail number so he corrected it.So it's now finished and available for download if you desire.
He will be working on the other B-17's that you guy's mentioned. So far here are the B-17's with the 463rd BG that we have available to us so far.
WOP II add on already has the B-17 42-31684 The Joker with it.
Repaints
42-97550 "Lassie and her Lads"
42-31836 "Pig Chaser"
42-31844 "Swoose (1944 Model)"
44-6283 "Mary Lou/Betty Lou"
44-6700

To all of you....
It's good to see these discussions on the Bulletin Board.  Good for everyone!!

I need to clarify something......Betty Lou and Mary Lou were two different planes.  Betty Lou - 44-6283;  Mary Lou - 42-31821

"Vaudeville, It's Coming Back" - 42-31852

I don't know if any of you have Richard Drain's book "5th Wing....History of Aircraft Assigned."  This is what I use for much of my reference work on airplanes cross referencing it with "B-17 Flying Fortress Story" by Roger Freeman.  Dick Drain's book is not 100% accurate (and Dick would be the first to admit it) but it's very close.  Over the years I have been able to add many of the bomber names with the help of some 'official' lists I have acquired as well as word of mouth from the veterans.

Now, I'm not saying that my references are 100% accurate either but thus far, I have only had a couple of discrepancies to straighten out.  If anyone wishes, I can put together what I have in a list and distribute it to you.  Perhaps someone can make corrections or additons that would be helpful to us all in trying to complete the name list for the 463rd.  I know we are missing quite a few names to assign to planes so if anyone knows a name to put with a tail number please let me know.

Thanks

Thanks for clearing that up Joel.
The repainter is going to re do his repaint of Betty Lou and I asked him to hold off of Mary Lou.
The repainter has just finished his repaint of the 463rd BG B-17
42-31827 G.I. Delivery so that's available now.
His next repaint that he told me he will be working on is
correcting Betty Lou again and then he will paint
Oh,My Achin Back and
Vaudeville,it's coming back.
So your requests will be available soon from what I was told.

Unfortunately I don't have Richard Drain's Book either as a book or on CD but I'd sure like to get a copy somehow.Joel please beg Richard Drain to put out that book on CD again if you can. That book is perhaps the book that I most desire.

Joel,if there is an aircraft that you want replicated too just let me know
By the way guys these repaints are just guesses from the available pictures.
The lettering may not be perfect nor the exact paint job, coloring or other markings.
He (the repainter) is trying to do the best that he can.
Thank you-Jon

The best place I have found to find old and out of print books is AbeBooks.com.  You can list a want and they will notify you when they find it. Hope that helps you  find the "5th Wing....History of Aircraft Assigned."

Thanks Rich you never know. Some day I may get a copy.
By the way I have good news for you.
Betty Lou has been corrected and is available for download
G.I. Delivery was lacking the Y and Pie slice and is now fixed
and

the B-17 repaint OH,MY ACHIN BACK! is now available for download.

In addition (Snuffy) is working on a replication of the Celone airbase for Microsoft Flight Simulator X and other 5th Bomb Wing airfields. He says that it's still crude (needs to be reworked) and hopefully we can find its exact placement and orientation.
